When it comes to marathons I like to keep my goals simple. There are so many factors that can affect race day that are beyond my control, that it seems silly to think that I can gun for a specific time goal without any other considerations. So my goals aren’t really time related at all. Sure I have a number in my mind something that is realistic based on the training I’ve done. But my aim for Boston isn’t to nail a time it’s to nail a “feeling.” So with that, these are my goals:
- Enjoy the day and soak up the experience.
- Negative split the course. Hard to do I know, but if I can I believe it will set me up for a strong finish.
- Leave everything out there. In training, you push but you don’t leave it all out there. You hold back a bit. I want to set myself up for a really strong final 10K and then leave it all out there on the streets of Boston.
The “feeling” that I’m going for is “relaxed and confident” in the first 16 and then “race my heart out” in the final 10. I have training I can trust. And I can’t wait to see what happens.
